According to the province of British Columbia, starting in 2021, there will be some changes to the application process for the Home Owner Grant.

Residents in municipalities will no longer apply for the Home Owner Grant through their municipal office. Everyone will now apply directly to the province using an online system that’s easy to use processes applications faster. You must apply for the homeowner grant each year to receive it. Only one grant can be claimed for a property each year.

To qualify for the grant you must be the registered owner of the residence. You must be a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, live in British Columbia and you need to occupy the residence as your principal place of residence.

The best time to apply is after you receive your property tax notice before your property tax is due.

  1. Wait to get your property tax notice in the mail.
  2. Keep your property tax notice on hand. It has important numbers you’ll need to reference to apply.
  3. When applications open, you can apply quickly and easily online.
  4. If you can’t apply online, call them at 1-888-355-2700.

You may also be able to apply for a retroactive grant if you qualified last year but didn’t apply.
